Astronema: "I could destroy you right now. You know that, don't you?"
Zhane: "You could... but I don't think you will." A Date With Danger
After a great deal of deliberation, I decided to classify this romance under "Heart of a Villain." Why? Because the onscreen attraction developed between Zhane and Astronema, and not Zhane and Karone. True, Zhane himself declared that he "felt something good in her," but he still took a great risk by not only falling for the Princess of Evil, but even acting on those feelings. And by appealing to Astronema's atrophied heart, he started a chain reaction that made Karone's recovery possible. Even though this relationship was only glossed over on the show (to my unspeakable disappointment, I might add), it did set the foundation of basic humanity upon which Astronema built her concept of love. Before Zhane's sunny smile and bag of marshmallows, Astronema never experienced an overwhelming attraction. And rather than ignore those new feelings, she let them motivate her to pursue Zhane, defying better judgement to let her heart guide her steps. The next time she let her heart lead her, she found her brother, and discovered the truth about her past and her nature. The series never reveals to us whether or not Karone and Zhane ever built upon that initial attraction, but we can safely conclude this: Zhane was her first love, and before him the very idea of "Love" was obscure and meaningless to the Princess of Evil.
