Shayla: "Something about the moon stirs me. I wish I could remember why."
Curse of the Wolf
There is an element of a fairy tale romance between this pair. The relationship between the gentle princess and her devoted protector is vague, but there is a definite romantic undercurrent. You could see the overwhelming joy in Shayla when Merrick was finally restored, and sense her frustration when he kept his distance. After three thousand years of solitude, and after conquering the curse of the Wolf, I so wanted these two to have a happy ending. Yet Merrick's conscience plagued him for releasing the evil of Zen-Aku, and his anguish over the loss of Animaria made it difficult for him to keep any ties to his former life. However, with time the princess and her knight did slowly restore a relationship, though certainly different than the one they shared in the ancient past. Yet one constant remained: each morning they played their song to the Deer, and in this practice recovered a small part of their more innocent past.
